16 Jan 2022 - Bushey’s Simo' Pairs Tankard

The first shoot of the New Year and we were in at the deep end attempting to win the engraved glass Simultaneous Pairs Tankard.

Although down on numbers, it was an enjoyable and very competitive shoot. Eight shooters signed up for the competition, two others namely Clare and Rodney shot 30 single birds.

This was a 40 bird shoot (20 simultaneous pairs) Five stands were used and as usual a wide variety of targets were presented, some straight forward and others downright tricky! We divided into two squads.

Martin’s squad:

Mixed fortunes here, nobody shot badly although Fred was disappointed with his performance ending with 20 from the 40 targets. Graham (Simmo) had a very poor start hitting only 1 target from the first 8 birds, but he pulled himself up by his boot laces to end with 21. For the other two shooters in the squad, Martin and Paul R it was neck and neck throughout the competition with Martin eventually coming out on top in this squad by one target with 28.

Clare shooting the singles shot well hitting 19 of the 30 targets.

Bev’s Squad:

Some good shooting from this squad, as with Martin’s group all the competitors ended with scores in the 20’s. Bev was the only one using his flint gun, probably because none of the others had a double flinter! He was modestly pleased with his final score of 26. Phil, although starting poorly, really came good later  ending with 22. Viking as usual was his consistent self, posting an impressive score of 27, but it was Bushey who topped this squad with an excellent 29.

Rodney, who was shooting singles had issues with misfires etc. etc. But as he said, it was a pleasure just to hear the gun go off!

So summing up. In the previous 2 years this trophy has been shot for, it has been won by Bushey and he did it again, Congratulations. In second place it was Martin and in joint third Paul R and Viking.

12 Feb 2022 - Club Shoot

Sandra’s squad:

There were 8 guns in this squad, 7 shooting the 40 bird doubles and Dick shooting the 30 singles. We walked to our starting position, stand 11 and were greeted by a very cold wind. This flat fenland landscape may in some ways be very beautiful, but it loses some of its attraction on a windy day like this! As we progressed through the stands we noticed that the wind was becoming stronger and starting to have a major effect on some of the targets which, when originally set up would have been testing but now were quite evil and some downright impossible. It is worth mentioning that in this squad Phil had to borrow one of Vikings breechloaders and also because of the wind, Tim had put himself at a disadvantage by using his flint gun. It is nigh on impossible to keep the very fine priming powder in the pan on a day like this.

It was clear as the shoot progressed that Viking was on excellent form, reading the targets exceedingly well. Graham (Simmo) was also doing very well breaking tricky targets which many others in the squad couldn’t touch. The other shooters in the squad weren’t doing very well and the scores reflected this. Viking was top scorer in this squad scoring a masterful 26, which ended up being the top score of the day. Simmo was second in our squad with an impressive 22 which put him 3rd overall. The remaining guns were in the teens or lower. Dick struggled today with his single as did our efficient scorer Sandra with her hat which disappeared downrange a number of times throughout the day! At the end of the shoot it was realized that there had been a slight mix up, the other squad had shot on stand 10 instead of stand 11, so difficult to compare scores between the two squads, but as a matter of interest and fairness, if that stand was removed from the equation Viking still ended up high gun with 20 from 32 targets.

Martin’s Squad:

There were 8 guns in this squad too, 3 shooting with their double barrel percussion muzzle loaders and Paul D shooting his black powder breech loader at the 40 bird doubles, the other 4 were shooting the 30 targets with their single barrel percussion muzzle loaders. As already mentioned, the wind caused problems with the majority of the targets, in particular the R-L fast looper on stand 6 which skimmed the high bank before disappearing out of view and the incoming teal on stand 8 which, already a long way out, was pushed back even further by the wind. When it was hit the delay was most noticeable.

In the doubles, Paul D with his hammer gun had a lesser day, frequent issues with the left firing pin failing to ignite the primer and very strong trigger pulls not helping I’m sure. Bushey, Mike and Jon were the other shooters with lower scores than usual being recorded, Mike getting a reasonable (in the conditions) 23, Bushey 19 and Jon shooting his new gun 17. Jon did hit some excellent pairs along the way but also had some misfires which never helps. Martin, Clare, Rodney and Paul R shot single targets and again scores were well down from usual with Paul R just taking top position with 15, Clare 14 and Martin 13. Rodney, also shooting a new gun (to him) did not fare well but enjoyed his day as always. Special thanks to go to Paul D who as he was shooting his hammer gun, he did the majority of the buttoning and scoring, thanks Paul, greatly appreciated by all of us.

The stand mix-up with this squad, shooting 10 instead of 11, was probably in Sandra’s squad’s favour. The 2 targets on this one were not easy to say the least, but having said that Paul R got 5/6 and Mike 6/8 of them!  We had a brief interlude on stand 8, when a young lad shooting his nitro gun had a few goes with Martin’s single muzzler. He achieved 2/3 fine centre pattern kills and seemed quite taken by it, a new member joining perhaps? .

Local photographer Matthew Nutt had been invited by Cambridge Gun Club to take some photographs of us shooting our muzzle loaders. Matthew spent some time with both squads for the morning taking photography of us and the guns with his high quality camera and lenses. He even had a go himself with Bushey taking photos of him shooting a muzzle loader using his camera!! Looking forward to seeing Matthew’s results, with the sneak previews that I saw, they should be good! We will let you know when the link to all the pictures is available

12 Mar 2022 - Club Shoot

Well, the weather looked promising for the third meeting of 2022, but although it was dry and bright, the south-westerly wind made it less than comfortable for the “dirty dozen” black powderists.

A large competition between Oxford and Cambridge uni shooters, meant we were restricted to the southern boundary stands 8 and 11-14 which put us in the brunt of the wind and its effect on most of the clays was detrimental to say the least, at least the sun was not in our eyes!.

We split into two squads, one shooting single targets the other O/R doubles, and bravely tackled the stands!

Singles squad:

The 6 single barrelers started on stand 8 which turned out to be one of the two slightly easier stands, but because of the strong wind the ‘B’ bird, a springing teal, was a long way out when shot at and there was quite a perceptible delay between the bang and the break. Some reasonable scores were posted here with Martin, Dave and Bev (who was using a flint gun) hitting 5, the remainder getting 3’s and 2’s. Stand 11, again one of the easier ones, saw Martin and Dave getting a full house. Clare only missed a couple as did Rodney who really clicked on this stand, he is definitely improving. Bev and Dick didn’t do well getting a measly 2 each. Stand 12 was a nightmare for all of us with Martin top scoring with just 2, Clare and Dave 1 and the remainder zilch! The scores were a little better on stand 13 with Martin and Clare both hitting 4, Dave and Bev 3, Dick 2 and Rodney 1. The last stand, again a tricky one saw Clare and Bev breaking 4, Martin 3, Rodney who was still stringing a few together got 2, Dave struggled with these targets and along with Dick only managed to hit 1 apiece. So top gun in the singles was Martin with 20, Dave, because of his poor last stand slipped to second position with 17 and Clare third with 16. Congratulations must go to Rodney who shot a personal best and won the ‘shooter of the month’ wooden trophy. Onward and upward Rodney!

Doubles Squad:

We started on Stand 11 with the low and high roosting pigeons. Most managed reasonable scores on this with perhaps the low and slow one causing most problems. Bushey and Derek hit 4, Viking, Paul and Graham 6 and Mike starting well with an 8. If some thought that stand was bad enough, they were not prepared for the next stand 12, 2’s 1’s and a zero from the poorly Viking were recorded. It could only get better? Not by much, Stand 13 saw 4 being the highest scores from Graham and Mike, Derek 3, Bushey 2, Viking 1 and Paul less. Feeling a little deflated, we headed for Stand 14. Here the story was much the same, Derek 1, Graham 2,Viking 3, Mike 4, Bushey an excellent 7! and poor Paul with another row of zero’s! We trudged wearily now the full length of the southern boundary to the last Stand 8, cover by some of the boundary mounds on the way made it feel almost pleasant, but the stand itself was in full blast from the wind! At least here there was some better scoring on two “easier” targets. Bushey who had some drum & nipple ignition issues on earlier stands, retired after 4 shots and only 1 kill. Viking and Graham managed 4 each, Derek a good 6, Mike on 7 and Paul, after scoring only 2/24 on the 3 previous stands, straighted this one in fine style. What a way to end!

The final scores were well down from normal, Paul made 3rd place with his good first and last stand performance for 16, Graham 2nd with just 17 and Mike taking top place with 25, which considering the targets, wasn’t too bad.

9 April 2022 - Club Shoot

A bright but cold morning greeted the 13 shooters, the moderate wind was from the NW so some of the stands were sheltered by the high banks which was a pleasant change!

We split into two squads, with a mix of singles and doubles in each, and shot five stands being 6,7,8,9 and the grouse butt. Four of the same O/R pairs for the doubles and three of each of the same targets for the singles. There were some tricky targets amongst them, but generally the shooting was of a high order particularly by the flinters.

It was good to see both Archie and Pete Dann coming along and having a go, and thanks to Janine for bringing Archie along.

Clare’s Squad: Using Mike’s new reporting format.

Three of us were shooting doubles and the remaining four the singles. Archie and Pete Dann had hired a buggy to transport them and their gear around the shoot, otherwise there is a lot of walking on tired old legs. Janine was their chauffeur some of the time, so they were therefore in safe hands some of the time!

Archie was the first to bow out. The 20 bore wads he was using were extremely tight and very hard, making it impossible to load his gun after the first couple of shots. Pete was also struggling, suffering repeated misfires. The remainder of the group managed to keep going and some good scores were posted.

In the doubles Viking (4,6,8,7,6) and Bev who was using a flint gun (7,6,5,8,5) ended in joint top spot, Viking winning on count-back. Jon Green (2,2,6,6,7), after a shaky start really started to get his act together and was the top scorer on the last stand. Bev was particularly pleased with the way yet another of his fettled double flint guns was going off.

In the singles, because Archie had retired and Pete was suffering from misfires, it was really a two horse race between Martin and Dave who was using his Pedersoli flint gun. Some great and consistent shooting here with Dave (5,5,5,5,5) coming out on top against Martin’s (6,3,3,4,5)

A big thanks to Clare for doing the scoring and buttoning for this squad.

A rather amusing footnote: As we were passing the other squad, Rodney proudly came over and pointed out that he hadn’t missed a target. Reading the report for Sandra’s squad I now understand!!

Sandra’s Squad: A new reporting format to try, Comments invited!

We started on stand 6, then 7,8,9 and finally the grouse butt.

The doubles. Graham (5/6/4/5/2) had an average sort of shoot with the last stand letting him down but he did get the last pair! Phil (3/6/4/6/6) was shooting well today stringing together some nice pairs, even on the grouse butt!

The singles. Dick (4/5/2/4/5) saw a return to form and was shooting very well with only stand 8 really catching him out. Tony (3/4/4/5/4) had an average sort of shoot not helped by ignition issues. Mike (6/6/5/4/6) was on good form only dropping 3 targets! And lastly poor Rodney, having just purchased a lovely single gun and having never shot it, brought it along to try. Unfortunately there appeared to be a buildup of crud somewhere in the breech area which despite much effort, could not be shifted. He retired without his gun seeing action and was going to give it a thorough clean in the afternoon at home. We’ve had several DNF’s but don’t recall a recent DNS! There lies a lesson to us all, never shoot a new gun without cleaning it first!

Thanks to Sandra for keeping us in check, trapping and scoring.

The Peter Dann Long Range Trophy

In the afternoon, 9 of us shot for the above trophy. “Where eagles look like sparrows” was not far wrong! We shot (at) twelve targets in total, three each of four, all on the ABT pro stand.

Scores were somewhat low as could be foreseen, but Dave Elvin showed us all how to do it with an excellent score of 5/12 to take the trophy. He took all three of the very long quartering in crosser target, no one else getting one of them! Martin and Viking Pete took three apiece to take second and third place. The rest of the field somewhat less!

21 May 2022 - Trevor Watling
Double Barrel Memorial Shoot

This annual competition in memory of one of our very early members comprises 20 on-report pairs.

It was shot over 5 stands (5,6,7,8,and 9) 4 pairs being shot at on each. There were a wide variety of targets, all very hittable if you kept your concentration. The weather was set fair for a change with just a light breeze, not too hot, not too cold, no bright sun to dazzle us, no excuse for missing anything! We had a very welcome visitor in the shape of Martin Burroughs who farms on Foulness Island off the Essex coast. Martin is no mean shot at both clays and game – we needed to keep a close eye on him! It was also good to welcome Dave (Hairy) Corneby and his partner Rachel who we haven’t seen for some time. Rodney pointed out, obviously in an attempt to intimidate us that he was like a coiled spring. So we had been warned. We split into 2 squads

Bev’s Squad:

There were 8 competitors in this squad all hoping to get their powder-stained hands on the trophy. As usual there was a wide variety of weaponry, most were using original percussion guns with Bev the odd one out opting to use his flint double. The order of shooting stands for this squad was 7,8,9,6,and 5. Viking (scoring 5,8,6,7,6) toward the end started to get gun trouble with the hammer catching the half cock notch on the tumbler so in the circumstances his 32 was a good score.  Simmo (4,8,6,6,5) had a mixed sort of day as did Phil (6,6,5,3,4) who was suffering ignition issues. Tim (4,3,5,3,2) and Paul D (4,5,5,2,4) had rather mediocre days with the odd flash of brilliance! It was a real pleasure to watch both Jon G (7,5,6,6,7) and Martin Burroughs (7,8,6,7,6) shoot. Their style was silky smooth, positive with no hesitation, and Jon was thrilled to shoot a personal best of 31. Bev (7,6,5,8,8) and Martin Burroughs tied for top spot in this squad with a score of 34, which ended up being joint second overall. Bev modestly received the ‘Shooter of the Month’ wooden cup because it was considered that his score of 34 with a flint gun was worth rewarding.

Martin's Squad:

This was a perfect day for us Muzzlers weather wise to shoot the Trevor Watling Cup. 'Perfect' weather shooting conditions  is very rare out in the Fens,  so we in Martin's team took full advantage. Stand by stand there were some excellent scores ,Martin leading the way dropping only one clay on the very first stand, Kevin and Derek dropped  two and Bushy had a moment missing 3 on this stand when his gun sounded very light on shot for the last pair, most unlike the Master!

From then on Martin proceeded to absolutely smash every clay to bits, Kevin was given excuse me rights to edge in when loaded as what’s left of his hips were playing up and shot a very respectable 30 , Hairy Dave took full advantage of the golf buggy cadging a lift all way round.  Rodney surprised us all with some of the most difficult clays being  powdered and ended with 5, but Martin led the team with a fantastic 39, Bushy next 33 with shot he could have had 35 and Half Ounce Derek on 31 .

Out of competition were the single barrel shooters. Rachel , on her first outing with us and using her single barrel muzzle loader beat the Hairy One who was using the Tsars double hammer on every stand, a very generous gesture by him. Rachel had that little smile of satisfaction all day.  The singles finished with Steady Eddie Dick on a 19/30 and Rachel with an excellent 19/30.  Hairy Dave, shooting his hammer gun completed the line up with an uncharacteristic  12/40.

Congratulations to Martin on winning the slightly tarnished dented quality trophy with a very polished 39. Well done all.

12 June 2022 - Recession Trophy Comp

A fine and warm June morning greeted the excellent turnout of 18 shooters, the breeze made the open stand bearable but the covered stand was fortunately somewhat cooler.

We split into two squads, and shot over two stands being the Skeet sporting and the compact sporting up t’ concrete path. Five targets on each stand, each shot at three times, making 30 in total.

The targets were chosen well with consideration for the meagre shot load, and all were quite killable with the half ounce. The compact sporting targets had a crosser, a looper, an incomer, a near and slow crosser (which caught several out!) and a nasty fast quartering away bird which was probably the hardest of the competition. The Skeet sporting showed a couple of crossers, a slow incomer, a teal and a tricky looper.  There were some good close scores with only 3 points separating the top 8 guns. An enjoyable, but sometimes frustrating competition, even Derek “The ½ ounce King” Richardson was struggling a little today!

Sandra’s Squad:

Starting on the Skeet layout first, the squad shot very well with Graham (10/12) and Hairy (12/10) joint top with 22 overall. Bushey (12/9) and Fred (10/11) were not far behind on 21 overall. Pete Dann (8/12) shot like a little demon to take the “shooter of the day” cup. Kevin (9/8), Tony (9/8) and Rachel (8/9) all finished on 17. Rachel shooting well again. Dick (8/7) brought up the rear with 15. Graham, despite a little “incident” (more below), managed 3rd place in the overall competition on countback. Thanks to Sandra for keeping the squad in check, trapping and scoring.

Clare’s Squad:

Starting on the Compact layout first, this squad also shot generally well with Viking Pete (12/11) coming top in the squad and taking the trophy with a fine 23 despite a bout of ignition trouble on the way. Bev (11/11) shot consistently well to take 2nd place in the squad and in the overall competition with 22 on countback. Martin (10/11) had a lesser day despite a reasonable 21. Mike (8/10) and Paul (9/8) were not on song today at all. The “Bury Boys” Derek (7/8), Little John (5/7) and Phil (using Derek’s trusty Ardessa 8/6), all struggled to find form, and Rodney hit one or two but enjoyed his day as always. Thanks to Clare for also keeping this squad in check, trapping and scoring.

The case of Man Vs Ramrod:

During the competition, Pete (SP) Dann was experiencing problems loading some very tight wads. Graham, keen to assist as always, inadvertently picked up Kevin’s ramrod to try and force them down. Unfortunately, and unbeknown to him, Pete’s barrel was longer than Kevin’s ramrod! And a ram with great gusto ended with a trapped fingertip between muzzle and ramrod ball! Ouch I hear you say, Graham was a bit more vocal with a throbbing fingertip and blood everywhere requiring first aid. The icing on the cake was when Pete came up to Graham later and calmly remarked that his gun was “alright now”!

Beware using an unknown ramrod in someone else’s gun, as Graham will testify!

28 Aug 2022 - Archie Owens Flintlock Cup

A fine and relatively cool morning greeted the turnout of 10 shooters, Covid and prior commitments kept the numbers lower than usual. As the day progressed, so did the temperatures, being quite uncomfortable by the end of the day. The Archie Owens Flintlock cup was the main event.

We kept to a single squad and shot over three stands being the Skeet sporting (12 singles, 6 pairs= 12 doubles) the pond (8 singles/5 pairs=10 doubles) and stand 3 the sporting compact (10 singles/ 9 pairs=18 doubles). Targets were selected with the flintlocks in mind, so nothing too extreme was shown! The sun made some targets difficult on the Pond and Stand 3. Thanks again to Sandra for keeping the squad in check, trapping and scoring and to Rachel for assisting Sandra between taking her fine stills from video photographs.

Flintlock Cup:

Only 3 entered the competition. On the Skeet stand, Fred and Hairy had slow starts both taking 7/12. Bev was on form and took an impressive 11/12. On the Pond, it was Hairy who came back strongly with 8/8. Bev and Fred taking 5/8 and 6/8 respectively. It was close and up for anyone as the last stand 3 was shot. Each of the 3 scored 7/10 making Bev the champion with an excellent 23/30, Hairy came a close second with 22.

Doubles:

A special mention needs to be made about Tony, who really shot his socks off for an amazing 31/40, his best ever AML score!! Really well done!! Tony was one of the 4 shooting their doubles. On the Skeet, Bushey and Tony got off to a fine start with maximum 12’s, Mike on 9 and Pete, shooting his breech loader, on 6. On the Pond, the situation reversed with both Mike and Pete taking 9/10 with Tony on 7/10 and Bushey 6/10. Only 1 point now separating the top 3 as they entered Stand 3, Tony, who was shooting extremely well today, took 12/18 to take top position with 31/40 overall and the Top Gun Cup. Mike and Bushey managed 11/18 to leave them joint 2nd overall with 29/40. Pete took 9/18 to end on 24/40, but up to the last stand had been shooting very well.

Perc Singles:

3 shot perc singles. On the Skeet Paul started well with 9/12, Phil on 8/12 and Rodney (shooting from the left shoulder in an effort to aid his left eye dominance) started very well with 5/12. Onto the Pond and Phil took 6/8, Paul 5/8 and Rodney (carrying on with his improved shooting) 3/8. So like the other 2 groups, it was neck and neck with Phil and Paul as they entered the last stand. Paul took a fine 8/10 to end on 22/30 and top position. Phil dropped 5 to end on 19/30 and Rodney, who had made a good start, unfortunately reverted to his old ways but ended with 8/30 overall which was his personal best.

11 Sept 2022 - Small Bore Trophy

A misty morning greeted the 16 shooters, 9 entered the Small Bore Trophy,

the remaining 7 shooting the same 30 bird single targets or 40 doubles. The temperature rose during the morning, the mist cleared and it ended up being

a lovely autumn day.

The competition course was set over 5 stands with 3 x 2 targets on each. The stands used were the ABT and grouse layouts plus stands 11, 12 and 13. There were a wide variety of targets, some relatively straight forward and others that were decidedly tricky.

Martin’s Squad:

There were 8 in this squad, 5 shooting the competition and the remainder shooting 30 singles using larger bored guns. Dave E and Bev were using their small bore flint guns, the remainder percussion. It was great to see Clare shooting again after her forced absence. The squad started on the ABT layout. The first target, a simple going away and rising target was straighted by the majority, but most struggled on the second target, a long dropping incomer. Martin straighted this stand with Dave and Graham missing only one. Moving on to the grouse layout the two driven targets caused problems for some of the squad, in particular the second target which was a very fast and low driven bird to the shooter’s left which had to be shot very quickly or it had gone. Nobody straighted this stand, but Clare, Dave and Paul R only dropped one target so it was all very close. On to stand 11 which on the surface looked very straight forward, both targets being slow incomers. The second target caught a number of the squad out as it was drifting slowly to the right on its descent. Even so Martin, Dave and Paul R all straighted this stand. Stand 12 was a testing one, the first target was a fast right to left quartering and dropping bird disappearing behind a high bank in front of the guns, the second was a quartering left to right looper which also did the disappearing act behind the bank. Both had to be shot very quickly and instinctively. The majority of the squad shot these tricky targets really well. Nobody straighted it but Martin, Paul R and Bev who by now was starting to string a few hits together only missed one. Stand 13, our final one was again quite testing. Both targets being long high crossers which, as they lost velocity, were curling away. Bev excelled himself here hitting all 6 targets and Martin missing only one.

So the final outcome. Martin was high gun in this squad with a very impressive 26 ex 30 which was the trophy – winning score, with 24 was Dave who tied with Bushey in the other squad for equal 2nd place overall and Paul R close behind with 23.

Out of the 3 shooters in the non-competition singles it was Clare with 20 who was top scorer with Phil on 18 and Paul D on17.

Sandra’s squad:

Sandra’s squad was a squad of 2 halves. Bushey, Jon, Derek and Viking were shooting the small bore competition and Kevin, Fred, Tony and Rodney were not! The foggy start and moist air caused a myriad of misfires and hang fires during the morning. Bushey had 3 misfires in a row on stand 13 until Derek pointed out that he was firing the unloaded barrel and it was the other one that was loaded! Notwithstanding all of these problems everyone had a great time with the usual banter in abundance. Kevin had the best time, whizzing along all morning on his buggy for one. Rodney, shooting his single barrel had to have a sit down after the first stand as he shot the first 4 clays straight! He ended the day on 12 birds which was his personal best! Stand 11 with the slow dropping incomers, kicked off the morning with Bushey not dropping a clay, Jon struggled hitting only 1! On stand 12, 3 guns didn’t drop a clay (Bushey, Tony and Viking). Stand 13 saw only Fred with a full house, the rest having a mixed bag. The grouse stand saw Viking, Bushey and Fred coming away with a clean slate. Derek rallied for the ABT and final stand when he was the only gun not to drop a clay. Fred was high gun on the double non competition with 34 to his credit, Rodney was high gun on the single barrel, but he was the only one shooting non-competition single barrel in our squad. High gun in the small bore competition was Bushey with a credible 24, followed by Viking on 21, Derek on 19 and Jon trailing on 17. Thanks to Sandra keeping us all in order and remembering which button to press

9 Oct 2022 - Big Bore Trophy

Our annual Big Bore competition for muzzle loading guns of 10 bore and larger was held on Sunday 9th October 2022.

The big bore shoot is always eagerly awaited by the Anglian Muzzle Loaders as it gives a rare opportunity to dust of the large wildfowling guns and give them an airing. Most of our members have acquired a big bore guns over the years and a good turnout of 17 were present with just 3 shooting normal smaller guns. We were pleased to have the company of Rob Porter on the day, his first foray into shooting clays with his muzzle loading gun. Rob is a good friend of Anglian Muzzle Loaders regular, Chris Sharp, and is generally more at home on the salt marsh as he is a keen wildfowler. We first met Rob a couple of weeks ago when he shot Chris' muzzle loader on one of the rounds at the muzzle loading skeet championships at Eriswell shooting ground in Suffolk.

The guns were divided into 2 groups, one with Bev heading the squad, the other with Sandra as chief scorer. The competition was a 30 birder held over 5 stands with 2 targets on each stand. Being a big bore competition, targets were chosen that were on the more difficult and distant side. There were absolutely no ‘gimmees’.

Bev’s Squad:

There were 8 Big Bore competitors in this squad with a variety of big bore guns, mostly originals. We started on stand 10 a very fast L to R crosser launched from behind a high bank and a medium height driven which if left too long disappeared into the trees. Very few of the squad mastered the crosser but most broke the driven bird. Graham ended up being front runner after this stand hitting 4 of the 6 targets. Stand 9 was a high L to R crosser from the tower followed by a very fast overhead going away. Again no exceptional scores. Mike, Bev and Fred managed to hit 3 from the 6 targets and everyone else less.

The 2 targets on stand 8 were a long crow and a very rapid L to R battue. Most of the squad made a reasonable fist of this stand. So at this point in the competition it was Mike and Bev leading the squad with a rather mediocre 11 from a possible 18 targets, closely followed by Fred with 10 and Kevin with 9. On to stand 7, a L to R crosser at about 30 yards followed by a tricky high R to L from the tower which drifted away from the shooter in the wind. Viking had now started to wake up and along with Graham shot 4 of these targets, the remainder of the squad hit a smaller number.

The final stand consisted of a right to left looper and a very fast going away teal launched from the top of the bank. Kevin loved these targets and only missed one which put him in joint first place in this squad together with Fred. So that was it, the top scores in this squad were Kevin and Fred with 17, Mike 16 and Bev 15. Rodney enjoyed his day even though he did not shoot to his normal standard. We all thought that the targets were testing but very fitting for the Big Bore competition. A most enjoyable shoot.

Sandra’s squad:

With Sandra in charge and keeping strict discipline, the 9 members of her squad started on stand 6. the A bird, a right to left dropping looper. It was great to see Rob his first ever shot at a clay with his single 5 bore smash to pieces. Jon Green, using his newly acquired wildfowling gun, was the only one to shoot all 3. The B bird was a long teal with the trap set some 25 yards in front on top of a high bank. The next Stand, 7, had a left to right crosser at around 30 yards as the A bird. Most did ok but there were no straights. The B bird was a high right to left crossed that started off at great speed but soon slowed up in the strong head wind and then drifted away from the shooter. This proved to be one of the most difficult targets of the round. Rob was the only person to straight this target. It was best shot under power before the wind had any adverse effect on its flight path.

Stand 9 was the next stand. The A bird was a very high left to right quartering away bird from the elevated platform which, itself, was on top of a high bank. None shot them all but Martin and Rob managed 2 from 3 apiece. The B bird was a fast overhead going away bird launched from a short tower behind the shooting stand. Bushey was the only one to shoot them all.We followed on with stand 8. The A bird, a very long (due to being pushed back by the strong prevailing wind) proved tricky for most but not Dick Egginton who nailed them  all. The B bird was a fast and close left to right battue. Martin and Chris were the only shooters to hit all 3 of these targets.

Our final stand was stand 10. Mike Whiting had warned us that this stand was of doubtful parentage. The A bird was a very fast left to right target presented as a rising crosser launched from the high bank in front. The B bird was a right to left quartering in driven bird, not fast but heading towards the canopy of a tree adjacent to the stand. If left late there was a tendency to stop the gun swing as the target approached the tree foliage. Martin and Chris stand really well only dropping one target between them.

At the end of the mornings shoot, everyone thought it an enjoyable but tough course. Martin was the winner of the coveted big brass pig trophy with a score of 22 ex 30 with new man, Rob Porter, in second place with 18 whilst Fred Garrod and Kevin Goate were tied for third place with a score of 17. A superb shoot in glorious warm sunshine. It's always lovely to see all the big guns in action.

6 Nov 2022 - The Hammer Gun Tankard

Although given a choice almost everyone turned up to give their hammer guns an airing, fourteen in fact along with with two muzzle loaders.

The competition was shot over 40 targets, and owing to the rather wet and windy conditions, it was held over two covered stands. With the hammer gun competitors travelling light – a bag of cartridges was all they needed, we were split into two squads.

Martin’s Squad:

We had 8 shooting in this squad which included Clare and Dave E who were shooting 30 single birds with their muzzleloaders. It was a pleasure to welcome newcomer David Y who normally only shoots with one of those new-fangled over and unders, but has recently acquired a rather attractive Stensby hammer gun (circa 1890). He had brought with him a couple of boxes of blackpowder cartridges to use and as can be seen from the final scores he used them well, even though he did forget he had 2 triggers a couple of times!

We were very grateful for being under cover on both layouts on what was a miserable day weatherwise.

The squad started on the ABT layout which turned out to be by far the trickiest layout with some really evil long crossers and loopers mixed in with some closer but demanding midi’s and quartering rabbits. We noticed during the shoot that the report from Derek’s gun was rather inconsistent, some of them sounding positively ‘nitroee’. Derek had accidentally mixed nitro and blackpowder cartridges. Derek then retired from the competition and shot ‘Birds only’ but he was teased about this! Fortunately his gun was proofed for both. Bushey and Martin had chosen the layouts and targets to be shot at, and one particularly nasty target was a very long L to R looper which Bushey reckoned was unlikely to be hit as it was a good 65 yards from the shooting stand (NO EXAGGERATION!!). Martin on the other hand thought that someone would hit it and guess who that person was, yes it was Martin who broke both of the targets in fine style using a true cylinder barrel!! He was the only competitor to hit this target in the whole competition.  It was David Y who led the field as we moved to the next layout hitting 13 of the 20 targets. Martin was close behind on 12 and Derek one behind on 11.

Because of little bit of a mix-up on stands it was decided that our squad would retire to the clubhouse for a cuppa and shoot the remaining 20 birds when the second layout was available.

It was a relief to shoot the second layout. There were still a couple of nasty targets but generally they were less intimidating and the scores reflected this with Martin only missing 2 which meant he won the trophy with 30 ex 40. David Y shot impressively to take 2nd place with 28 and Bev hot on his heels with 27.

In the tussle between the non-comp singles it was Clare who shot her muzzleloader really well hitting 20 of the 30 single targets. Dave E was a little disappointed as he didn’t shoot to his normal standard hitting 16.

Sandra’s squad:

It was good to walk into the CGC on Sunday and see the usual AML members getting stuck into what seems to be the obligatory breakfast nosh up. There looked to be about 15/16 of them huddled round the tables having a good chat, but all good things must come to an end, and looking out of the windows at such a wet and breezy day, a start had to made for the Hammer Competition, were they down hearted???.....Naghh!!

Sandra took control of 8 shooters and made a start at the Skeet layout, where 12 targets were presented, the shooting was great to behold indeed. Viking with that very nice 16g Purdey took 12//12. Fred and Dick 11/12 a touch of envy one has to say.

The squad then moved to the ABT stand where we briefly “mingled” with Bev’s happy shooters and shot 8 targets all together before they retired for a coffee break leaving us to take on 12 more very challenging birds. It has to be said at this point in time the wheels did sort of begin falling off just a little bit, they were difficult!! A  mention has to be made for Tony who shot 5 of these tricky targets on the bounce! Someone hit an almost impossible bird that disappeared over the trees on its way to Suffolk somewhere, unfortunately my old brain won’t remind me who, but you know who you were, what a shot!!

We moved back to the skeet range to complete the last 8 birds where only Viking, Bushey and Graham only missing 2 out of 8 each.

All in all despite the poor weather, everyone was in the usual good humour upon their return to the Clubhouse for yet more grub and of course the important results and the tankard being handed to Martin.

It was a super day in excellent company. A big thanks to Sandra for scoring and looking after us 8. Oh and I hope your hat didn’t scorch by the log burner Sandra!

Next Meetings:

Our next club shoot is on Sunday 4 December and this will be for the coveted Brad Randall Powder Horn Trophy. This competition will be shot over 30 single targets. Once the shooting has finished for the day, for those who wish to stay on there will be a Christmas meal in the clubhouse – more details to follow.

4 Dec 2022 - Brad Randall Powder Horn

Well, it was a cold old day with some NE wind that greeted the 11 shooters for the last shoot of 2022, at least it wasn’t raining!

We were competing once again for the Brad Randall Powder Horn Trophy, 30 bird singles. The fine old trophy having been consistently won by but a few people. Dave E once several years back, Bushey for the last 4 years and you guessed it Martin the rest! Read on to see who it went to this year. A special part of the day was that the Gun Club had kindly prepared an end of year meal for those club members who stayed until the end of the afternoon’s shooting.

The course was set over 5 stands, being 2,3,5,7 & 8, with 3 x 2 single targets being shot at on each.

Stand 2:  L-R looper and a very slow distant incomer target which finally dropped about 20 yds out

Stand 3:  R-L crosser and a L-R looper

Stand 5:  L-R fast quartering away and dropping target and an equally fast R-L quartering away teal

Stand 7:  L-R slow crosser and a R-L high crosser

Stand 8:  An incoming high crow and a L-R fast low crosser

All targets were readily hittable with our guns but some proved far more difficult to read than others! We split into 2 squads and a brief summary for each squad follows:

Sandra’s Squad:

There were 6 in our squad, all shooting in the competition. We started on stand 3 where most shot reasonably well, although unusually Bushey missed his first 2 targets. On to stand 5 and the two testing targets sorted out the squad with only Bev and Bushey really getting to grips with them, the others much less so, particularly Mike with just 1/6! Stand 7 saw Mike, Bev and Bushey straighting the stand, Kevin dropping one and Tony and Paul just taking 3. Onto Stand 8 and this time it was Mike, Tony and Paul killing them all, Bushey dropping one and Kevin and Bev on 4 each. It was very close as we walked back to the last stand, stand 2. Here, that distant slow incomer caught out most of the squad, with only Bev and Bushey finding them with 2/3 each. Most scored 4 overall except Tony with 3 and poor Paul who, having increasing misfires and issues with his Beretta O/U, failing to score. It was a fairly close competition for this squad with Bushey coming out on top with 23 which put him in 4th place overall in the trophy competition, and Mike and Bev both on 22.

Thanks to Sandra for trapping and scoring for us, appreciated as always.

Clare’s Squad:

Martins crew started on stand 2 and with a chill wind blowing across the fens Graham showed everyone how to do it and shot the lot. The B bird, a slow incoming edge on target was very challenging with Martin and Viking dropping 1 apiece, Derek 2 and Clare 3. On to stand 3 where it was Clare’s turn to be the only one to straight this stand with the others dropping at least one target and Derek missing 3.

Derek’s excuse of being vertically challenged on stand 5 by only hitting 2 didn’t get any sympathy as everyone else cleared the lot. Stand 7 was definitely Clare’s downfall as she missed all 6 targets - a good score here would have put her into contention for winning the trophy, sadly now not to be.  The R/L high crosser caught out the rest of the squad who all dropped just one target – but pretty good shooting so far from this team of guns. Stand 8 again was Clare’s again as she powdered everything - brilliant shooting. Martin, Viking and Derek all dropped 1 each, and a chuntering Graham dropping 2 targets here, as his last clay was a miss he saw his chance of winning the Horn Trophy disappear in the cold East Wind along with his strong verbal expletives!

Martin shot an impressive 26 winning the Trophy  outright, Graham 25 equably impressive, as was Vikings 24. Clare’s 21 saw her take Derek’s Tenner once again as he followed up on 19.

The Christmas dinner of bangers & mash followed by  apple crumble with lashings of custard was delicious and most welcome after such a bitterly cold day, plates were very quickly cleared of food by all.
